Mona Lisa

Mona emotes
Courtesy Priya

Read The Da Vinci Code. Got to know a bit of Christian mythology (if there can be such a thing). The ending is beautiful. I could relate to the desperation of the characters whose zealous mission goes waste. A piece of new-found knowledge (or gossip): The Holy Grail is usually talked about as the cup from which Christ drank during His Last Supper. But Dan Brown says its Christ's wife!

Ads

DD-1 the national TV carrier carries ads which deal with social, environmental issues. I was surprised to see an anti-piracy ad by NASSCOM on DD-1. It urged people to defeat piracy by not using pirated software. Ads to increase awareness have come a long way from the ones where coconuts were smashed when not inside helmets.

Upgrade

Finally upgraded my home computer: Redhat 7.2 to Mandrake 10. Watched Matrix 1 for the umpteenth time; this time on Linux. It was a joy to see Linux accurately identify all pieces of hardware. But it botched up my NT boot loader (XP). Trying to fix :(

The karnataka ministry is a joke. Krishna has the aura of a leader. Dharam Singh appears to be an incapable leader. Almost every development is met with a short-sighted immediate solution. With a number of scams being unearthed, CET causing pain, police officers accusing politicians, kannada film industry baying for their pound of meat and miffed IT barons shaking their heads in disapproval, the cup of woes if full for the ministers. Let's see how is shapes up.

Irony in Life

An intuitive feeling I had over the years has started to seem real nowadays. Lots of events happening in our lives are ironical. The way we interpret them and their effects while going through them is nearly the opposite of what we feel in hindsight. The maxim "First impression is the best impression" seems to have been made in haste. Though it is moot to say that life itself is an irony.

Muslim marriage code

Under the muslim marriage code, a muslim male can have 4 wives. A lawyer said on radio that there have been instances of hindu males converting to Islam to marry more women. Cool deal. :)

Read "The God of Small Things". Somehow I felt it was like 21 Grams in its style. Weird capitalizations and word combinations are in plenty. Not as cynical as Naipaul. Not as energetic as Rushdie.

Freeculture

I recently hit upon an interesting website while googling for IRC. http://www.freeculture.org/ is inspired by Lawrence Lessig 's concept of a Free Culture.

A nice article about Sonia-sycophancy is on Rediff.

Found IRC quite interesting. But I haven't yet found channels of interest.

The Beginning

What is life? Every moment of thought given to this question complicates it even further; some sort of positive feedback. Of course the importance of personal viewpoints or perceptions cannot be overstated. At a basic level, Descartes said "I think therefore I am", meaning existence is defined by our consciousness. Of course the other way, i.e,. some kind of objective existence independent of someone thinking about it, can always be imagined. Two people who have dealt with these issues and I have read are Vivekananda and D.V.Gundappa. Vivekananda, with is flowery but powerful oratory, touches the issue and appeals to our rational senses. D.V.G, with his pithy statements, appeals more to me. His directness, a sense of childlike wonder, a deep appreciation of beauty and pragmatism are a rare combination.
